Epic in July

July 2, 2009

We are going to continue hosting weekly $100 Epic tournaments on Thursdays in July with the following changes to prize support and format:

Entry fee: $10
First Place: $60 store credit, Stolen Memory promo card
Second Place: $40 store credit
Random door prize #1: The Shield promo card
Random door prize #2: Stolen Memory promo card

This prize support will be awarded for tournaments with 10+ players. If less than 10 players show up, store credit will be awarded to top 2 at an approximate 60/40 split equal to the full amount of entry fees collected. Stolen Memory promo cards will be awarded regardless of attendance and The Shield will be awarded in any tournament with 4+ players.

We will also continue to run booster drafts on Tuesdays with one Stolen Memory promo given to winner and one awarded as a random door prize.

Epic 5K Coverage

June 29, 2009

We hosted the first Designed Deck $5,000 championship for Epic this weekend. A total of 40 players attended the event – a bit less than I expected (my guess was 60) but in line with what Rob and others had anticipated. A number of Epic pros such as Will Morgan and Tim Capes traveled from outside the region while most (about 30) of the players were from NY, NJ, PA and CT. 5K Florida champion and YuGiOh pro Jerry Wang was considered a favorite to win the event but failed to make top 8 this time around. He made up for it on Sunday, by winning free airfare to 5K in California this September.

Perhaps the saddest story of the weekend was that of 5K MA winner Jason Tien. His flight got canceled, stranding him in an airport for close to 20 hours. He ended up arriving in Brooklyn toward the end of the day on Saturday, way too late to participate. Jason graciously volunteered to write up some feature match coverage of the later rounds, and it will be posted soon at epictcg.com

On the brighter note, Epic designer Rob Dougherty was on hand talking freely about the future of the game, upcoming set, and gunslinging against all comers with some wacky decks. Anyone who played Rob got a free token card while anyone who managed to beat him got a complete set of all 7 tokens. A Hall of Fame Magic player, Rob was not easy to beat even though he was playing with intentionally casual decks.

In the finals it came down to Marc Paschover vs Tim Capes. Marc hails from a Magic background and once represented Belgium (where he used to live) as part of the national team at a World Championship. In addition to being one of my oldest friends personally, Marc has been a Kings Games regular since day 1 so of course it was great to see him do so well. Tim Capes is a Vs System pro from Canada who is active and well-known in the Epic online community. It was great to see him again (last time I met Tim, our teams split in the finals of a Vs System 10K championship). Tim and Marc split in the finals and played it out for the title, bragging rights and the Doom promo card and trophy. It was an exciting match that went on for about an hour and lasted all three games. In the end, Tim’s Unstoppable deck persevered against Marc’s control build 2-1.

Epic Thursdays

April 28, 2009

We have a two-month promotion for Epic starting on the first Thursday of May and leading up to the $5,000 championship at the end of June.

Every Thurday we are going to run an Epic Designed tournament with a $10 entry fee. *GUARANTEED* first place prize for each tournament is $100 cash. *GUARANTEED* second place prize is 12 Epic booster packs. These prizes will be awarded even if only 4 players show up (4 will be the minimum needed to host the tournament). In addition, tournament winner and one player at random will each receive a Nullifier promo card.

We are very very serious about building up interested in Epic designed deck play in our area and beyond and we hope that players will pitch in to make these tournaments successful. Spread the word, fill up the car with your friends and come play Epic with us every Thursday night! Tournaments set to start at 7pm, as of May 7.

In other news, four new Epic promo cards are available for tournament support as of May 1st and we will begin giving them out for all scheduled events.

A Tale of Two Laptops

April 5, 2009

As we wait for Konami to unveil their plans for future Organized Play, we are swamped with emails and phone calls as our loyal players are clamoring for big exciting tournaments. We are still very hopeful that some news about the future or Regionals and Shonen Jump Championships will come really soon – but in the mean time we are offering you guys a treat!

Next Saturday (April 11) we are going to host an advanced format constructed tournament with a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 laptop as a first place prize! This tournament will take place at the convention center in downtown Philadelphia. Entry fee is $25. Every player will get a promo card just for participating in the tournament and we will add booster pack prizes for top finishers if we get a solid attendance.

John Williams himself will be on hand to judge this event – and to take your Mountain Dew if you are careless enough to leave it on the table during a match!

But that’s not all! It would be hardly fair to give Yu-Gi-Oh players a laptop and leave the players of my current personal favorite TCG – Epic – without one. So what are we gonna do? We are going to give away ANOTHER Dell Inspiron Mini 9 at a constructed Epic tournament held at Kings Games on April 18th (details to be posted here soon).

Epic Pre-Release Recap

February 23, 2009

Kings Games hosted the largest Epic pre-release in the country this weekend! While most events had a dozen or less entries, we had 55 entries on Saturday! We are definitely shaping up to be the major Epic hub which is great.

Product goes on sale this Friday and we are going to start hosting a weekly tournament every Thursday starting in March. We are also going to have our first Grand Tournament on March 15 and a Gateway tournament where the winner gets a free entry into the 5K championship to be held at TJ Collectibles. Heck, I think I am going to draft it up at the store tomorrow!

This Weekend Is All About The New Games

February 19, 2009

I am super excited about the Epic pre-release this weekend. The game has been gaining a LOT of momentum at Kings Games. It feels like Vs System the week before Marvel Origins came out – tons of anticipation and most of the regulars already know how to play before the cards are even available.

I will be head judging the pre-release at KG on Saturday and at Brothers Grim on Long Island on Sunday. Herb Shaw is going to head judge at TOGIT (Sat) and Gaming Etc (Sun) and Dorian Redburn will run the one at Alternate Universes (Sun). We are also running a World of Warcraft Realm Qualifier this Saturday at The Encounter in western PA. Derek McCauley will be head judging that event.

This week also marked the release of Huntik. During Upper Deck Game Day we taught over 160 players in the NY/NJ/PA areas how to play this game. We scheduled a release celebration tournament for Sunday and have some cool promo cards to give away – we’ll have to see if there is interest before deciding if we are going to schedule tournaments for this game in the future.

Epic Grand Tournament Schedule Up For Season 1

February 4, 2009

Epic Grand Tournament schedule has been finalized and is now posted at kingsgames.com/epic.php We will be running a total of 9 Epic Grand events during season 1 – that is between mid-March and mid-June. Six of them will be Sealed and three Constructed format.

The first eight are now scheduled and we are holding one in reserve to schedule at whichever store in our area does best with Epic sales and tournaments in its first weeks of release.

Change Of Pace

January 22, 2009

We’ve been so busy with all kinds Yu-Gi-Oh! news (and occasional car crashes) recently but let’s not forget that we sell and promote other games too and talk about Magic today.

Our weekly Wednesday drafts have been happening steadily with 8+ players showing up every week so that we were able to run them as sanctioned events. Over the course of next month we plan on showing Magic some more love. Here is what we have lined up:

Satuday, Jan 22 at noon: Standard tournament for a box of Shards of Alara in prizes with only a $5 entry fee.
Saturday, Jan 31 at 9am: Conflux Pre-Release! We are partnering with Gray Matter Conventions on this one so we will have plenty of product available and will be able to run Two-Headed Giant and side events during the day.
Friday, Feb 6: Conflux releases. At 7pm we will run the sealed Release Celebration Tournament, with promos and giveaways galore!
Every other Friday in February: Friday Night Magic is back! We will run it as Standard tournaments and they will be FREE to enter. That’s right, free – just come play!
Every Wednesday in February: We are continuing our $9 drafts promotion into February so players can get their hands on some cheap Conflux cards.

February is also the month Epic launches, with pre-releases on the weekend of February 21-22. We are going to be doing a lot of demos at Kings Games starting in early February to try and build up a really solid community for this new, exciting game. By the end of the month we will have the final list of our pre-release locations, but we expect to be able to run them in five locations across NY, NJ, PA and CT.
